In the heart of London Fields, E8, we encountered a generously proportioned garden with a rich history.
A legacy of good design had created a space with character and purpose, however in the furthest reaches a raised area had fallen fallow, becoming untapped potential.
Our client sought to transform this neglected area into a serene backdrop that would complement—rather than compete with—the garden’s established elements.
What distinguishes exceptional garden design is knowing when to intervene and when to honor what exists. This London Fields project presented a rare opportunity in urban gardening: sufficient space to create a distinct yet harmonious extension of an already successful design.
Rather than imposing an entirely new vision, our design approach celebrated the garden’s existing narrative—the varying heights of deck and lawn, mature trees, and established sight lines—while introducing elements that would enhance the overall composition.
The elevated rear section of the garden became our canvas. Here, we crafted a contemplative space that serves as both visual destination and tranquil retreat. Two magnificent Dicksonia antarctica (tree ferns) now stand as sculptural anchors, their dramatic silhouettes creating a dialogue with the garden’s mature tree.
Drawing inspiration from Japanese garden principles, we arranged carefully selected stones in concentric patterns around the tree ferns. This subtle and somewhat whimsical move brings a meditative quality to the space—a counterpoint to the more structured elements elsewhere in the garden.
Our client’s preference for low maintenance, high impact planting shaped our approach to this transformation. Rather than imposing busy planting schemes, we selected bold, architectural specimens that command presence while requiring minimal upkeep. The same restraint extends to the ground level, where slate shingle provides a clean backdrop with textural interest.
What distinguishes this redesign is its focused intervention in a specific area while working sympathetically with existing elements. The transformation feels both significant and seamless—drawing the eye through the garden to culminate in a moment of quiet contemplation, supported by an unobtrusive irrigation system that ensures the tree ferns will thrive for years to come.
